To everything there is a season…

“…and a time to every purpose under the heavens” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Yep, folks! Change is happening in our humble little halls and we are SO excited! Verse 3 says, “a time to tear down and a time to BUILD”. Well, we are doing a lot of that! Tearing down old walls, literally and figuratively, and building new, better ones. We are constantly challenging  ourselves to do things better and different…to reach deep within and find inspiration to do our best work yet! The walls within AGID and PARISH are constantly changing, yet sometimes things feel monotonous. When this happens our brains start spinning. What can we do to shake things up? Well, we tend to think we can do a lot to shake things up…this is why you all are always thinking we’re a little crazy?! But a little crazy never hurt anybody ;)

These are some changes happening around here…

Our PARISH show house in Auburn is being installed as I type! So much time and effort has been put into making this show house absolute perfection and we are so excited about it! The picture below is of a custom headboard we had upholstered and then painted! We are slightly obsessed with it!  If you come by PARISH in Montgomery do not be disheartened by our lack of merchandise! A lot of it is gracing the interiors of the show house (that we hope you will go take a look at), but will be back in about three weeks. But that is not to say the storefront is empty. We still have some beautiful pieces so please come see us!

Here is an up close preview of the finished product! Pictures from the show house coming soon!

One of our favorites (and lifesaver on many installs :) ), Steve, hanging some beautiful pieces for the show house!

As you may have already noticed, we have a new website! This new site has been in the making for a few weeks, but on our hearts for awhile now! We knew we wanted to change things up, but were unsure of how to execute this because we are design people, not computer people! Thankfully, we met Kris with KBK Creative and immediately knew we had met the person who would lead us on this fun (and foreign) journey! Working with her has been an absolute blast and we love love love her creativity and spirit! Let us know what you think of the new site….we love feedback!
A BRIGHT spot this week has been a fun and spunky install for one of our favorite clients! Her living room, smaller, yet full of potential was just screaming for some color, love, and personality! Meagan and Ashley created such a fun space! I ran by the client’s home during the install to drop by some necessities and immediately fell in love with the space! In my opinion very few people can execute a space with bright and funky colors without it coming off as juvenile…but when you let experts work their magic you get a room that left me drooling! The “before and after” of this great space is coming to the blog next week so be on the lookout!

Lastly, along with our “new look” we figured we needed a new group picture and headshots! Luckily, we know the perfect person for the job! Holland Williams met our crew downtown for a fun morning of modeling (HA) and faux laughing! It always seem to be extra hard to laugh on cue, but apparently it makes for a great photo! Thanks for putting up with our shenanigans, Holland! Here is a sneak peek…

We hope you all are excited about all the new changes happening over here! There are more announcements to come, but we’re keeping our lips sealed for now! Stick around for more changes, more fun, and of course, more insanity!

Until next time!

Renovation Blog: Finish Selections and What I have learned

Happy Thursday Sweet Friends!

I hope you all have enjoyed the Renovation series thus far. Today we are going to discuss an important aspect of the renovation to help maintain a timeless look: finish selections.

**Subway Tile: This is a super easy go-to for bathrooms and kitchens.  We usually use a medium tone grey grout.  It’s even available at Lowes or Home Depot.  If there is a little extra money in the budget, a hand mold subway is my all-time fav!

**Small Hexagonal Mesh Back Tiles: We like to use these for shower and bathroom floors.  Again, these little guys are very cost effective.

**White Marble for Countertops: Its been around forever and only gets better with age.

**Cross Handle Plumbing Fixtures

**Plumbing Fixture Finishes: This is a question we get quite often…We generally specify polished nickel or chrome for historical renovation projects.

These are just a few of our favorites finishes we typically use in renovation jobs. They are all so timeless!!

Switching gears a little, I wanted to share some the most important thing that I have learned from these projects.

For starters — and I mean this in many different ways — a house is just a house. My parents still live in the same house in Baton Rouge they bought when I was 4 years old and I have wonderful memories of “home”. I truly want our family to have similar memories and sentiment and I want my children to remember “home” the same way I do. I hope our next project will really be “it”. Time will tell, but I have learned I am not in control.

I get VERY attached to every house we renovate! (Barrett says I get waaaaaaay too attached.) So much goes in to the renovation process…thought and design, time and detail, sweat and frustration…along with a lot of reward!! So for me, it is very hard to let them go, especially when I was sure we had finally found our “forever house”… (this has happened a few times ;) )

797 Felder Avenue was featured in the March 2013 issue of Southern Living

While living at 797 Felder (what I thought was our “forever house”), I was taught a lot of things. This was the first time I had to learn a house is just a house. You can’t take it with you…it’s just a possession. Houses are just things; things God lets us enjoy, but ultimately belong to him. We renovated another house as an investment property while living in our “forever house.” When the housing market crashed along with the economy 5 years ago, this newly renovated house had just gone on the market. We prayed and prayed for God to bring us a buyer. My prayer went something like, “God, thank you for both of these houses you have so graciously given us. I really, really love this “forever house” we live in and we need you to sell the other one.”   Little reality check over here…I was quickly reminded everything we have, HE gave us. I learned (not very easily) how to have a thankful heart for all HE has given and to let HIM choose our path based on what HE sees best. So, long story short, we soon sold the “forever house” and moved into the investment house, which we also loved.  At the time, the love for the new house seemed to be less than the love for the “forever house”. Looking back on it now, I know the love was simply different, not less or more. As a result of HIS timing, the 18 months in the “investment house” became some of our happiest times as a family! :)

We will have a few more posts in the coming weeks to continue the renovation series, but we also have lots of fun things coming with client installs, events, and some exciting new development on our end :) Stay tuned and keep reading…
