Renovation Blog: Finish Selections and What I have learned

Happy Thursday Sweet Friends!

I hope you all have enjoyed the Renovation series thus far. Today we are going to discuss an important aspect of the renovation to help maintain a timeless look: finish selections.

**Subway Tile: This is a super easy go-to for bathrooms and kitchens.  We usually use a medium tone grey grout.  It’s even available at Lowes or Home Depot.  If there is a little extra money in the budget, a hand mold subway is my all-time fav!

**Small Hexagonal Mesh Back Tiles: We like to use these for shower and bathroom floors.  Again, these little guys are very cost effective.

**White Marble for Countertops: Its been around forever and only gets better with age.

**Cross Handle Plumbing Fixtures

**Plumbing Fixture Finishes: This is a question we get quite often…We generally specify polished nickel or chrome for historical renovation projects.

These are just a few of our favorites finishes we typically use in renovation jobs. They are all so timeless!!

Switching gears a little, I wanted to share some the most important thing that I have learned from these projects.

For starters — and I mean this in many different ways — a house is just a house. My parents still live in the same house in Baton Rouge they bought when I was 4 years old and I have wonderful memories of “home”. I truly want our family to have similar memories and sentiment and I want my children to remember “home” the same way I do. I hope our next project will really be “it”. Time will tell, but I have learned I am not in control.

I get VERY attached to every house we renovate! (Barrett says I get waaaaaaay too attached.) So much goes in to the renovation process…thought and design, time and detail, sweat and frustration…along with a lot of reward!! So for me, it is very hard to let them go, especially when I was sure we had finally found our “forever house”… (this has happened a few times ;) )

797 Felder Avenue was featured in the March 2013 issue of Southern Living

While living at 797 Felder (what I thought was our “forever house”), I was taught a lot of things. This was the first time I had to learn a house is just a house. You can’t take it with you…it’s just a possession. Houses are just things; things God lets us enjoy, but ultimately belong to him. We renovated another house as an investment property while living in our “forever house.” When the housing market crashed along with the economy 5 years ago, this newly renovated house had just gone on the market. We prayed and prayed for God to bring us a buyer. My prayer went something like, “God, thank you for both of these houses you have so graciously given us. I really, really love this “forever house” we live in and we need you to sell the other one.”   Little reality check over here…I was quickly reminded everything we have, HE gave us. I learned (not very easily) how to have a thankful heart for all HE has given and to let HIM choose our path based on what HE sees best. So, long story short, we soon sold the “forever house” and moved into the investment house, which we also loved.  At the time, the love for the new house seemed to be less than the love for the “forever house”. Looking back on it now, I know the love was simply different, not less or more. As a result of HIS timing, the 18 months in the “investment house” became some of our happiest times as a family! :)

We will have a few more posts in the coming weeks to continue the renovation series, but we also have lots of fun things coming with client installs, events, and some exciting new development on our end :) Stay tuned and keep reading…

European Inspiration

Hi PARISH friends!

Happy Thursday! We are so excited to finally share some photos from our shopping trip in Europe! Ashley and I picked up so many ideas and were absolutely inspired by the intentional details throughout Belgium, France, and England! We were so humbled by the experiences we had and the places we visited! We cant wait to show you all of our purchases… but they are currently on a big container sailing the open seas! Stay tuned for a fun “our container has arrived” announcement! :)

We started our European adventure in the beautiful city of Brussels, Belgium. We arrived and immediately went exploring! The city and the people were completely enchanting, and we quickly learned that no one was in a hurry to do anything!! If you know Ashley and me, you know we are always on the go and can’t sit still for very long! After our very first dinner in Belgium (which lasted about 3 hours), we knew we were in for some change! Thankfully, we welcomed the break and learned to slow down and just enjoy ourselves (an idea we are trying to enforce over here!)

Ashley and I are rarely left speechless… however, when we stumbled into this stunning church (Notre Dame du Sablon in Brussels), we were so emotionally overwhelmed and just stared in awestruck wonder!! This was such an incredible experience that definitely started our trip off on the right foot! Its amazing to think that this structure took over 2 centuries to complete!

We also explored some beautiful gardens and courtyards! Many of the antique dealers that we purchased from actually operated their business out of their homes! This gave us such a good chance to get to know people on a personal level! We made lots of new friends! (How perfect are those beautiful planters?!)

antwerp

We explored the city of Antwerp and learned the history of this fabulous statue! It is rumored that hundreds of years ago, a giant terrorized the city. In this “David and Goliath” type tale, a young boy cut off the hand of the giant and saved the people in the city. This statue is of the young boy throwing the hand of the giant- thus the name “Antwerp” is translated to mean “City of the throwed hand.” We were fascinated!!

While we were in Belgium, our sweet guide surprised us with a trip to Axel Vervoordt’s castle home! He is such a talented designer… and his castle property definitely did not disappoint! Even his horses were stunning!

We stayed at multiple hotels throughout Europe, but a sweet bed and breakfast in Belgium took the cake for us! We slept with the doors open at night and woke up to this beautiful countryside! It was so picturesque- literally bunnies were playing in the fields!! Heaven!

From there, we headed briefly through France and then to England! This is of the beautiful coast of the English Channel! Brighton Beach was filled with such an eclectic crowd of people and incredible views!

As we explored through all of Europe, Ashley and I experienced “Charm overload” and loved every minute! I think we were constantly snapping photos of storefronts that spoke to us!! This green storefront is a Pet Shoppe… take note petco. THIS is how its done :)

This is the Royal Crescent- an area of luxury condos! We were told that if you live in England, this is THE address to have! The building overlooks a beautiful park with a killer view!

england

Can I just say that after coming back, I’m mildly obsessed with the idea of having a blue door?! We saw about 500 different shades of blue doors, each one perfection in its own way! This one in the Cotswolds was my favorite! Everything about this house is pretty great in fact!

The charming streets in England were to die for!! Strategically placed flower boxes, chalkboard signs, and beautiful storefronts filled this beautiful country!

3

We visited an incredible warehouse in Belgium that was actually attached to the owners home- how gorgeous is this entry? We can’t wait to show you the inside!! Let’s just say I’m still dreaming about it!

One of our favorite parts of the small cities we visited were the cozy alleyways in between buildings. This one is so sweet! Boxwoods, mossy cobblestones, and wood beams… doesn’t get much sweeter, folks!

I hope you all enjoyed our little photo recap! For more pictures, checkout our Instagrams using #AFGIDdoesEurope. I think we took about a thousand pictures, so more to come! Stay tuned for a fun announcement regarding our container’s arrival with all of our purchases!! We can’t wait!

Until next time,

A WORK IN PROGRESS…FRATERNITY FUN

Hi PARISH friends!

Today, we want to share one of our most recent projects with you! Our studio is filled with young women, and as much as we like to think that we JUST graduated from college…. It’s just not the truth. However… some things about college just don’t ever change- like FRATERNITY houses! They’re always messy, sometimes smelly, and usually full of handsome fun loving guys!

The Sigma Nu chapter at Auburn University is no exception! We have been enlisted to update the main living room and of course, had to share the nitty gritty details with you!

 CATESS-FIRST-AU-GAME-041-620x926

The Beta Theta chapter was chartered at Auburn University in 1890. They have been pledging great guys and winning numerous accolades ever since! One of our favorite alums is Ashley’s husband, Barrett! They (along with Cates and Rett) spend many football Saturdays at the house in the fall in anticipation for an AU win!

                      OB-Sigma Nu

These are some of our selections for the new living room! Our primary concern in this space is DURABILITY! These guys play hard so our choices have been smart ones that will last many pledge classes to come! Every single fabric that we chose is washable! We have opted for deep, comfy sofas and club chairs to give the guys ample seating in their home away from home. This space will be used for studying as well so a large chandelier, sconces, and drum shades will provide plenty of lighting!

When selecting a color scheme, our intention was to create a timeless space that can be enjoyed by alumni and actives for years to come. Our favorite selection was the drapery fabric. What could be more masculine or southern than pointers?!

We can’t wait to show you some “after” images of the living room in the fall! We are so excited that these sweet guys will have a great new space to relax and enjoy their college days! We all wish we could relive ours!

See you next time!
